The Tranquilandia raid was a joint DEA-CNP raid on the Tranquilandia, a large cocaine production laboratory located in the jungles of Colombia operated by the Medellín cartel.
The DEA installed a tracking device on a shipment of ether, a critical ingredient in the production of cocaine, bound from the United States to Colombia. They tracked the shipment and discovered the location of the lab, and had the CNP raid the complex. The ensuing gun battle resulting in the deaths of several Colombian policemen and cartel gunmen.
The operation led to the seizure of several tons of cocaine worth $1.2 billion, and the arrest of cartel kingpin Carlos Lehder. This was the largest seizure of cocaine in the world till it was surpassed by the Sylmar warehouse bust in 1989.
